Kristen Hawley Turner
Professor of Education, Director of Drew Writing Project
Dr. Kristen Hawley Turner is a professor of education at Drew University, where she focuses on the intersection of technology and literacy. She also serves as the director of the Drew Writing Project, a NJ chapter of the National Writing Project that designs meaningful PD for NJ educators. Dr. Turner is the recipient of the ELATE/NCTE Richard A. Meade Award (2022) for her work with ELA teacher development.
Dr. Turner received her BA from Bucknell University, her M.A. in Curriculum & Teaching from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Literacy Education from Rutgers University. She has also served as an assistant professor at Fordham University. She develops virtual, asynchronous professional development to support writing instruction for preservice teachers and continuing professional development.
Dr. Turner’s research includes a heavy emphasis on multimodal writing in digital spaces. Influential writings include articles “An Interconnected Framework for Assessment of Digital Multimodal Composition” (2021) and “Digital Literacy (Still) Can’t Wait: Renewing and Reframing the Conversation” (2022). She also serves as the lead editor for the blog Writers Who Care.
