Yu-kai Chou is an author, an entrepreneur, a lecturer, and a usual International Keynote Speaker on Gamification at organizations such as TEDx, Stanford University, Google, Tesla, Lego, etc. He created the Octalysis Framework and founded "The Octalysis Group". He began his research on gamification in 2003 and in 2004 he started his first company, "The Future Delivery Network", with the goal to develop methods that will make productive activities more fun. In 2006, he launched the FD Career, a website that transformed career development into a Role Playing Game. His vision was for his website to become the "LinkedIn for Virtual Worlds". In 2012, he published a Gamification Framework called Octalysis. This framework analyzes the driving forces behind human motivation. According to the Octalysis framework, if there are no core drives present, there will be no motivation and no behavior. This is based on the assumption that almost all games appeal to fundamental human drives that influence our decision-making and motivate us to engage in a variety of activities. So, instructional designers have to exploit these core drivers in order to increase players' motivation.
