Star Roxanne Hiltz

Distinguished Professor Emerita 

Dr. Star Roxanne Hiltz is a Distinguished Professor Emerita for Information Systems at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She received a Master’s Degree in Sociology from Columbia University and a doctoral degree (PhD) in Sociology from Columbia University. She is credited with publishing The Network Nation in 1978 which has defied standards for the field of computer mediated communication. Additionally, she is credited with envisioning, creating and implementing the first virtual classroom in 1986 or what we now refer to as a Learning Management System. Dr. Hiltz transitioned to emeritus status in 2007, but continues to conduct research, advise PhD students and teach the occasional courses. Some of her well known pieces are:
