Valerie J. Shute

Professor of Education

Dr. Valerie J. Shute is a professor of education at Florida State University (2007-present). Her research focuses on the implementation and evaluation of complex learning systems.  She occasionally generalizes this purpose even more broadly: to enhance learning. Her research expands varied applications of human cognitive psychology, and projects range from integrating stealth assessment in gamified learning environments to developing models to evaluate our understanding of complex phenomena.

Dr. Shute earned her B.A. from the University of Northern Colorado (1977) before graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara with her M.A. (1981) and Ph.D. (1984). Before joining the faculty at FSU, Dr. Shute was a principal research scientist for ETS (2001-2007).

Her research continues to examine the intersection between individuals and larger systems, especially through video games and other non-traditional tools that may unlock deeper learning.
