Katie Salen Tekinbas

Katie Salen Tekinbas is a professor at the University of California at Irvine in the Department of Informatics. She teaches video game design, development of interactive experiences, and exploring STEM careers through esports. She is currently doing research in ways to impact online toxicity through “Good Play,” developing game-like learning environments in education, and empowering students drive their own learning.

 

She was the Executive Director of the Institute of Play from 2007 to 2019; however, all its resources are still publicly available at their main webpage. Her most famous work is Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals that was co-authored with Eric Zimmerman helped establish many of the modern guidelines for game studies.
